The Zodiac wrote:It's the former Rex Webster High Tech FJ that was blue. Now it's been destroyed I mean rebuilt by that tool, I mean Paul Beck. Such an iconic car destroyed, why wouldn't you just start with another car than destroy a piece of history.
It is sad BUT I saw this car just before the rebuild and it was FAR from its former glory
The smooth undercarriage and smooth engine bay and everything were nothing more then thick layers of bog to get it looking good and that was completely cracking out and beyong it. I have pics I took of it from then cause i was shocked at how much was cracking out of it and had no idea on the cars history. Fair enough it was awesome back in its day but I actually think that this new bloke has saved the car from being destroyed. As I said I didnt know the history of the car at the time but and dont get me wrong in pics and from a distance it looked good but it was definately a "good from far, far from good" story that one.
Hes givin the old girl a second chance in the show series and i dont think it looks to bad either. Better having it look like this then be sitting somewhere deteriorating or even worse sitting out in the weather somewhere turning to dust.

I think the answer would've been to restore it to it's former glory, you dont buy a car like this to completely change it's identity. This car was voted 'Car of the Decade" by Street Machine, won awards at the Oakland roadster show in the USA and a whole lot more!
Alley Cat, Street Legal and Checkmate are all showing signs of wear and tear but I'm pretty sure everyone would kick up a stink if the current owners all cut them into utes or changed them beyond recognition. Street Legal as a standard fronted green HJ ute powered by a 202, or Checkmate as a tonner or maybe Alley Cat painted blue with a WB statesman front and 350 Chev........
These cars have a place in Australian car culture history and once you butcher them you cant get them back, Websters old FJ now looks like some bloke pulled all the blingy bits off his Honda Civic and slapped them on the poor old girl. Looks fully sick now. NOT!
Pay homage to the legends! I'm sure there'll be plenty who like it's new look but they'll be the younger generation who never seen it when it was built and dont know it's history.
I know we've had discussions before on the fact that the owners can do what they want since they own it but why buy an icon to completely change it???
Websters FJ when it was in it's hey day.

Re: Motorex July 23rd & 24th July
i can remember reading the story on the car about 5 times - he sold his house and lived in a caravan to finish it
Only got to see it in the flesh once - WOW, made Howard Astill and Fitzpatricks cars look bad

I'd just like to say "Thank You Steve for sharing your Great Pics!"
Unfortunately I didn't have the time or money to attend this year.
Hopefully I'll be able to attend in 20 12.

Re: Motorex July 23rd & 24th July
I dont mind what he did to the car. his choice but people who dont know the car and he tries to pass it off as his build. that annoys me.my mate pulled it apart painted it and put it back together, the new owner bought it paid for the rest to be done
