HZ Sandman Ute.

Post  The Zodiac on Thu 03 Dec 2009, 8:45 pm

Here's some photos of our ute we've been building for me to use as a work ute. Its a 1980 HZ Holden ute that was sold brand new in Tumut, it had 2 elderly owners than my mate bought it and I got it off him. A mate and me gave it a bare metal respray in its factory Palais white (he's a painter so he's a handy bloke to know!) Laughing , fitted a new front spoiler and gave the old girl a general tidy up. I bought some new stripes for her off ebay and had another mate thats a signwriter fit them for me so at least they went on straight! I'll post some interior and engine bay shots up later once we've tidied them up abit. Its got all its original owners books in the glovebox too! Cool

I've known Rob for years and he's had those number plates for as long as I can remember, they've been on more cars than I've owned! Very Happy

Maybe Rob should start an album titled "VIB-88R" to show all those vehicles? Very Happy

If my replica hz ute comes up half as good as this one I'll be stoked...

Is that bumper the genuine article? It's a Hj right?

Will prob get myself a hz spoiler off evilbay checkers.... Just putting feelers out first.

A quick question... The black outs on the sills did'nt seem to go on the bottom guards on the hz's, is that because off the spoiler?
Was this an option or has anybody seen them we both? I have'nt.
And what colour was the tub originally painted, car colour of GMH black?

Hey Al, the bumpers off a HJ van I bought for a mate, it had an aluminium bull bar when I bought it. I've lined up a good bar with the rubber strip and over riders off another mate in Sydney.

The tubs where just the grey sort of colour, not body colour or black.(I've seen one with a black tray and it looked sh!t!) We did mine in chem flec grey, to resist scratches and look close to original.

My black out's are the same as the originals mate, looking at old mags and photos they did varie abit, I think this must've been due to which factory they where built at or if they where a dealer optioned ute like mine. The spoilers where always body coloured, so if you continue the black off the sill around you'll have to paint the spoiler black and that'll look a bit funny I think.

We didnt cut holes in the front panel either, we just painted two black squares where the ducts got because I've seen GTS spoilers on other vans and utes without the holes or blackouts and they look sh!house especially on light coloured ones.

Here's some photos of in the back for you Al.

My ute also has factory fitted WB buckets, WB door handles and anti crack chassis bars because it's one of the very last HZ utes ever built being a Feb '80 build. Wink

Very nice back...
Looks like it has never really been used?

I'm opting to go for the car colour in the tub, see how much colour i have left after painting main body.
My tub was well used, and well dinted, may take some time cleaning up.
How much roughly did it cost to get the tough rhino lining?
The other area i'm tossing up over is wheather to black out the window moulds or not?
Mine were blacked out, including door handles & headlight rims... not sure if i'll put em back.

Pull off that hawks sticker too!!

Cheers Al (i reckon my colour look's very similar to Al's 'Brutle')

I opted to put chrome trim on mine to break it up a bit, and my door handles where chrome WB ones. My tubs had a little bit of use but my mate tidied it up for me, the Chem Flec paint cost around $45 a litre and we used 2 litres of it and had a tiny amount left but we jammed it on pretty thick.
Im going to put another set of wheels on it eventually but the N67 factory alloys look the part even if they look a bit soft. Laughing

Another related, not related question.

What procedure do you tackle for finishing off final 2k painting?

do you wet/ dry sand then polish?
Or just leave for a few months before adding decals etc & polishing?
What do the pro panel beaters do?

Any thoughts?

Cheers Al

Mines painted in good old acrylic, thats what they had originally so thats what we put back on it, its only a backyard job Brian and I did in the carport. He's a painter so I'll ask him for you how he finishes off his 2K jobs. Cool Wink

That's one smoking looking V8... Shocked

You got any tips bought painting engine blocks?
How'd you strip block before painting? Chem dipped or by hand? tips?

Just heatproof paint or a primmer & what first?

Cheers Al.

Hey Al, I stripped it all with a wire wheel on an angle grinder then wiped it down with thinners and just used VHT engine enamel. Rocker covers and sump where the same, but with a bit of sanding thrown in for good measure. It's not perfect but it's only for my work ute so it'll do I guess. Wink
