R.I.P. Pat Fay

Post  agro on Sun 01 Sep 2013, 7:31 pm

Read this morning that one of the legends of vanning had passed away.
Pay Fay was the builder of an FJ Hearse that had murals on all panels.
Unfortunately never had the pleasure of meeting him but his legacy will live on.

Yep RIP Pat, got to spend a bit of time with him when he was selling stuff at the Wagga speedway many years ago.
A vanning legend for sure.

RIP Fat Pay!

Pat was a true legend of Vanning and Street Machining in general.
I had known Pat since the early '80 when I was selling products for him, Pat Fay's Early Holden Spares out of his house in Blackett, Western Sydney. He was always having some sort of health issue. He would always show me his dream that he was stocking up (his retail trailer) and the truck with Sylvester and Tweety on the air foil. That's the happiest I even seen him, when he was talking up a sale at a carnival type event somewhere.

A bloke who looked more like "Crusty the Clown" you would never meet.

Last I seen him was at the Bathurst Royal Show many years ago. A van full of Sh!t 'n' Glitter with punters coming from everywhere.

Yes, Rest In Peace Pat Fay Sleep

Another good guy bites the dust.

Pat was a great bloke, had time for anyone and was always fun to be around in the old days. I knew him pretty well back in the 70's when we ran into each other at van shows and other car events. We both had some paint done by Daryl Issacs at around the same time. We lost touch with each other for a few years, but in the early days of the Summernats he was there, larger than life.

He did more to continue the popularity of the the FX/FJ Holden than anyone else I know.

Rest in Peace Mate. burnout

I had the pleasure of meeting Pat very briefly when he was setting up his FJ hearse for a show at the Melbourne Exhibition Buildings in what I'll guess to have been around early 1982. He had to cut the chat short because he was about to be interviewed by a TV crew shooting the van. There he was, covered in dirt, filthy face, shabby shorts and singlet talking to this hot sassy looking young TV journalist (tough work but I guess he figured someone had to do it). I remember him saying he didn't just make the FJ into a hearse, it had actually been a hearse in its earlier life.

Later a dark haired model dressed in a black dress wearing bright red lipstick lay in the back of the hearse carrying a red rose for a photo shoot. ( A hot corpse; the good looking women just kept hanging around him !!)  The photo later appeared in a car magazine I bought some months later (but no longer have; I think it might have been an issue of CV&T)

Yep, that was Pat alright! The shorts and singlet were a uniform for him, and that's a cool pic. Never afraid to drive his van anywhere, anytime.

Let's never forget him......burnout

Maybe, think it may have been early morning just after setting up. Pretty sure it was at Pacific Van Club's Show on Bass Hill Plaza roof top.
Stubbies, Singlet or Trackky dacks was Pat all over. Note: the HMH on the jacket = Humpy Mecca Hearse so he was serious this show!

Welcome, it's an honour to have you share some time with us.

For those of us that knew Pat he will never be forgotten, the Street Machine article will remain forever as a reminder of the great bloke Pat was to everyone.

I'm sure we'd all be happy to have you on here as a regular.

Best wishes in what must be a tough time for you.... burnout

Carol, you are going to hear stories about Pat for the rest of your life. He was that kind of bloke that everyone knew and has a story about something relating to him. He got around to so many events at so many places and as you are more than aware, had the kind of personality that everyone warmed to.

I've got a million of them.....

..... I'll share them with you one day soon I hope.

I was reading through some old 'Custom vans & trucks' magazines on the weekend and came across Pats van (2 pages, 1 in colour, 1 B&W).
It is issue #17 and as far as i know is still avaliable as a back issue from whomever the guy is that sells them at swapmeets etc.
I know most issues were avaliable only a few weeks back as i saw most of them for sale at the stall at the bendigo swapmeet.

unfortunately i bought mine a few weeks back at the bendigo swapmeet and don't have a contact number.
he had a big setup with trestle tables and lots of brand new old stock magazines.
he told me he was the owner/editor /organiser of the magazine back in its day.

if i do come across contact info i will post it up here.
Pat sure was famous in panelvan heydays that's for sure.
