Chevy Dump pipes question

Post  agro on Tue 15 Oct 2013, 9:39 pm

This may seem trivial, but when i had dump pipes years ago, they still put fumes in through the rear tailgate.
SO, is there an "ideal" way to have them??
Is it better to angle them out towards the side more then usual OR do you angle them towards the rear of the car more??
Pics would be appreciated. Very Happy
Thanks in advance

I think that the more you angle them to the side, the better chance of the exhaust getting broken up by the surrounding airflow. It stands to reason that if you aim them back, the exhaust should get trapped in the vacuum under and around the back of the van.

I've just recently had some new tailpipe fitted and because its still single (I'll fit a full dual exhaust when I chuck the big motor in), I just ran it out the back and turned it to the side. It exits just under the edge of the bumper and I can drive around with the tailgate open bounce and get almost no fumes. cheers

When I did the pipes on one of my Toranas I ran them out behind the back wheel and they look cool. Obviously fumes aren't an issue in a sedan.

Have a play and see what you come up with, and let us know.

I had Chev dump pipes fitted to the WB when I first owned it.......15 years later when I got it back it's still running the same system even now its the same muffler and pipes, although it now runs different extractors due to the engine swap but it's never been fumie inside the van.

I think that more important than the fumes is to get them to look right... something way to many people get wrong over and over.

Sad part is they think they look good.

Jamie Parry is one person that gets the look right on a couple of his vans now.

Hard to make out in the photos, though his red van was probably done better.

Hey Rob, do you have any pics at all??
Jon, What part of Jamie's do you class as looking right... Is it the angle outwards or rearwards?

I like the over all look.

Not a foot of under sized, skinny chrome pipe hanging down.

They sit about at the right position along the quarter panel. (good distance away from the tyre and/or mud flap.

The angles are better than most. Not parallel to the tyres.

Best of all there two good sized tips per side! if you where to run one tip per side I would be going no less than 3 inch tips.

Thanks mate.
Got them done today. It is a single 2 1/2" chrome tip each side. They come out just behind the wheel. (Between what would be the mudflap and tyre).
I'll get a pic in the upcoming weeks.

Like this Agro?

When I got my done ten years ago I didn't even know what style I was trying to emulate, I just wanted them to dump in that way.  It wasn't till someone called them 'Chevy dumps' that I even knew that was what they were styled like...  Rolling Eyes

I'm surprised that you got fumes inside the car since from what I've been told GM used them specifically so fumes didn't enter the wagons. Ford and Chrysler used a similar design on their wagons and all 3 had the pipes exiting almost 90* out the side.

My original dump pipes were angled different to what they are now.
Also i feel the roof spoiler didn't help my cause either.
