Have five transits and two full customs… I wonder if any of you can help i am looking for any information on the sundowner Transit vans.. I am writing a book on 50 years of Transit for Ford and need to know if anyone has some details on it…I have a brochure. ……….. The book I am writing has a chapter on customising and this is a big hole that needs sorting out………..any help would be great..

Re: Transit sundown information
Hi Peter, I have a Transit Sundowner as well as Escort and Falcon XC Sundowners. This is what I know or have been reliably informed about the Transit Sundowner. This may not be all correct. Based on the 125 body, there were 140 Transit Sundowners produced from 1978 to '81. As you may have seen from the brochure and some other info I posted on the two main UK Transit forums, they were very expensive for the time at over AUD$10 000.00. All were 4.1L six cylinder, producing 114hp, with a choice of three speed manual or automatic and were all floor shifts. They had the Borg-Warner diff at 3.89-1 ratio. Sundowner additions included Houndstooth trim on rotating front bucket seats, full headlining and carpet front and rear, white "Sunraysia" wheels (14x7), swing away chrome side mirrors, square headlights, painted blackout treatment, exclusive Sundowner stripes and badge and rubber bumper covers. Many of these items were added to the later XLT Transit. They had their own Ford Motor Company of Australia Model code starting with 1D instead of 1B. I would guess at less than 10 remaining making them one of the rarest Ford models around.
Hope this helps. Don't hesitate to contact me via PM or this forum if you have any specific questions.
Cheers, David Vervaart.
