Compliance Plates On or Off?
Guys and Gals,
The Compliance plates on the HJ have never been removed and therefore they still retain the original rivets. Granted the rivets on the HJ are fairly similar to a standard rivet and not like an earlier Holden style rivet.
My question is when it comes time to send the car to paint, do you drill the rivets out and remove the tags for safe keeping? Or do you keep the tags intact and run the risk of damage (or theft) during the paint process.
Seems a no brianer, what do you think?
Gaz.

Gaz,
I would remove them. You can buy the real GMH replacement rivets. I would never use a standard rivet. Certain GMH plants painted the passenger side tag.
You also have on the underside of some tags a texta marking that is typically a match to other numbers on a genuine original (non d!cked with) Sandman.
You will also be able to clean them up before re-fitting.
Much care is required not to damage the tags when removing. Do NOT remove the texta marks (but photograph them) and store them safely. Buy the rivets and replace as soon as the Van is painted.
Regards, Smooth

Yep. Remove them. Paint under/around will be better for a start.

Smooth,
I didn't realise you could get original rivets, that's great news.
I'm interested in the texta marks under the comp plates, will be great to see.

Here is a link to a ebay listing: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/ID-Tag-Rivets-to-suit-Holden-HJ-HX-HZ-WB-/371014295628
Yeah, I'd be keen to see the markings myself.

Yes they are but!blur1 wrote:lol. they're just 'blind' rivits. hardwares or plumbing supplies will sell them.
They must compress the same diameter and give the same look as the original version that GMH used. If you fail by putting the wrong rivets on a genuine Sandman/GTS etc it will be noticed by the people that are in the know and it could effect a selling price or collectible desirability.
If you can find the same correct version at the hardware store (and I'm not saying you can't) then that is great. Although you'll probably spend similar amount of cash.

Re: Compliance Plates On or Off?
To me (i'm a roof plumber) and i use thousands of rivits a week, they look like common aluminium blind 1/8th rivits.
the length looks like 4-3 from the pics.
they are about $15-20 a box of 1000. you do the math.
