BACK TO THE FUTURE !!!
i cannot help but to feel there is a slight swing back to the custom vans of the late 70's early 80's of late. the price of Vans never got anywhere near the dizzy heights that were predicted to have followed the muscle car price explosion & have been stuck in the low 5 figure range never got anywhere near the 6 figure price tag of there Torana Monaro or GT constituents, the average Sandman/Sundowner in good restored condition pulls around 20k a mint concourse example lucky to sell in the 30's an untouched example cannot in many cases pull 12k there is little or no interest in small vans & only heavily modified big vans pull any attention & the ass has well & truely feel out of the market of late the prices are still dropping ......
but its not all doom & gloom for as i look around i see new interest in modified vans .... lets face it vanners right from the start never left there vans stock the first thing they did when they got home was to pull the stickers the stripes off & start looking for bigger wheels to stick under them, i think the fact the market never imbraced panelvans like they did muscle cars is a blessing in disguise this opens new doors.
its not just happening in the traditional club inspired trends either its far deaper than that, did any one see the bliss n eso combi unveiled at motor ex that off tap & is in my oppinion an idication its coming back but to me personally it Vans like watching Robert Viehbock WB being re-built, it was Simos awsum Val pano at the nationals that ignited a fire in me on the spot as soon as i seen it i turned to Ashleigh & John & said im building an 80's inspired custom .....
So i am currently sourcing bits & pieces & soon we are jumping on this wave & doing our own retro custom, i plan to use nothing that wasnt available circa 1982 i want to feel a little of that aura of what it would have been like to build something in the same style as the legends that came before us, the Strachan's the Evans the Godbee's the Mercer's the Marsh's the Roach's the Abbot's the Tarte's the Cummings the Pierce's the Cundy's the Ellis's the Towers's ... you get the picture
i feel a definate swing towards customs & its Back to the Future for Vanning ... anyways after all there is only so many Sandman/Sundowner & Drifter factory clones the scene can support
i plan to start a thread on here as well as fb once things start to happen more seriously & i honestly look forward to the challenge as its something i have never done before. i just hope i have what it takes to see this kind of project through ......
as we all know Bathurst will be massive next year a whole new level & all in all i think the future is looking pretty good for vanning right now
Cheers AL

Re: BACK TO THE FUTURE !!!
It's a well known fact that fashions eventually come back round
over time..
Skinny jeans ,the bikini and the mini skirt..
The custom van may not come back as exotic as the days of checkmate & invader as people may not want to cut shells up to preserve the shape.
But how long can you go on with the same old boring colors and stripes that where mass produced
by a car manufacter.
Mini trucks are a prime example of this ..They chopped, channelled, modified chassis ,custom
body work shaved door handles, different model fronts & guards. All stuff that has been done in
decades gone by..
So it is only a matter of time before our time comes back around...

Re: BACK TO THE FUTURE !!!
part of the reason behind our build was to bring back the old ways of modifying vans,

Re: BACK TO THE FUTURE !!!
Andrew the thing I admire about serendipity it was completly built under your carport right down to the wiring and interior,it was done like how most of the iconic vans were built back in the day in single car garage's and carports and for that Kerri and yourself will alway's have my respect with what you acheived and the passion you have for vanning.
Al it will be good to see how you go with your project keep us updated it will be good to see another old school custom.
Regards Tony.
"leave em"wanting more!
