Annoying Exhaust Fumes Empty Annoying Exhaust Fumes

Post  agro Thu 18 Sep 2014, 7:25 pm

As you all know, i've got dump pipes on my van.
I STILL get fumes into the car.
Bumperette holes have bolts in them.
Made double sure that there is no daylight getting in through the rear tailgates.
Took it for a 1/2 hr drive today and fumes still affected me.

NOW, could the fumes be coming back into the engine bay then in through the vents. I thought this because of the low air pressure under the car would be swirling around?(There is a hole in the bonnet for the air cleaner).
It also has a roof spoiler so that will increase the hole in the air behind the van.

Thanks in advance.

Craig
I think you will find it's your bottom tailgate .
Remember last November we where discussing the bow in the bottom gate.
With my old one I didn't have any at all.the exhaust is still in the same spot,
But with my new gate I get fumes in now.
I still have to try something to stop it next time it's out..

Yeah, i did think of that.
I've put an old sheet down between the matress, lower tailgate and rubber.
Can't see any daylight at all through the rubber.
Not unless it's still seeping through.

The vans get quite a vacuum/low pressure behind them , I don't think it would take
much of a gap of any sort to pull fumes in ..
Maybe try masking up on the out side to see..

Hi Agro. I had dumps behind the diff on my old van. I also had a rear spoiler and I had no problems at all with fumes. Sounds like maybe still some gate problems.

Might try that one thanks.
Was just about to put a bonnet on with the phase 5 scoop and no holes cut out of it.
Young fella wants the "hornet" style scoop on it though.

Hey Agro,

mines ran drop pipes since 1994, the gates sealed better the first time I owned it and it never had fumes and the top gate doesn't seal 100% now and I still don't get fumes or at least none that I can say I really notice. (I'm always a bit vague though).

It's not missing any grommets from the firewall or the shifter boot isn't sealing?

The only van I've ever had that really leaked to the point it'd make you feel sick was my old Tuxedo black Sandman but the engine in it was 3 parts buggered and fumey as hell.

Check for holes in the firewall or around shifter dude. Wink

Annoying Exhaust Fumes Empty Re: Annoying Exhaust Fumes

Post  Amxg Fri 19 Sep 2014, 11:08 pm

I had a similar grief that i noticed after changing a cat converter a while back. A trick i was shown is to get paper and slide it between the seal/mating surfaces and check for a light grip or free movement.

Mine was open about half an inch it turned out.

Anyway, if it does give you a lot of grief you'll probably find that (though it feels totally counterintuitive) closing up all the front windows will reduce that low pressure that helps pull in fumes. Imagine a venturi effect dragging it all the way from the back of your van, to go straight out the window and probably recirculate again as it gets pulled into the low pressure area of drag behind the tailgates..

I also just bought a can of spray adhesive and foam strips. It seemed to work fine for the time being.

A.

Also i had a chat with an exhaust specialist at that time who explained to me that, in addition to the above, if youve got a decent airgap/leak then dump pipes, axle drops, side or anything else wont really help all that much to stop it getting sucked in

Hi. I actually have not got to it yet. I looked at the attached picture showing the Allen key in the hole to adjust. Had a quick look at mine and yeah that appears to be the problem, you can see that the holes don't quite line up. Might have a go this week sometime. Cheers

Annoying Exhaust Fumes Empty Re: Annoying Exhaust Fumes

Post  big rob Wed 24 Sep 2014, 1:38 am

Some vans just seem to suck the fumes in. I've had a few that were like gas chambers but my current WB is totally different. I can have the windows open and get no smell of fumes at all, and in fact can drive with the tailgate open and the front windows shut with no fumes.
My exhaust exits below the bumper towards the outside so maybe it just catches the airflow past the van.

My blown SL/R Torana has dump pipes that exit in front of the diff and it is a gas chamber, so it may not be so much a matter of tailgate seals. It may be just as you suggested, the airflow below isn't clearing the gases fast enough.

Hope you can work it out.....
