Heading South....

G'day all,
My young bloke and I are taking a quick trip to Sydney. Just curious on which is the best route to take.
I haven't really done this trip before, Google tells me that the three fastest routes are either via Armidale, Musswellbrook or Mudgee.
Can anyone shed some light on road quality vs timeframe? Remember i'm from NQ so a gravel road in NSW would be better than our freeways.

Armada-Cessnock-Maitland then the f3(m1) to Sydney
Don't go thru Mudgee bit of a goat track
Or if you don't mind a little road works take the coast road from surfers,ballinakempsey, port Macquarie ,f3(m1) to Sydney
The coast rd used to take me about 10hrs loaded in the truck..
