Nearly time to actually do something about brakes, to replace the 4 wheel drums.

I have looked at the cost of rebuilt boosters and calipers. Not cheap, but if it has to be, it has to be.

Before I spend up , can you give me some thoughts on the possibility of using all commodore braking.

I reckon that I could buy a whole commodore, and fit the rear end, complete with discs, to my HG van.
I also think that I could adapt a commodore booster and master cylinder to my firewall.
I read that commodore front wheel bearings will fit HG stubs. Is the distance between the inner and outer bearings the same?
That just leaves a question about calipers. Is any adaptor plate available, or feasable, to mount commodore calipers to HG stubs, either drum stubs, or disc stubs?

Am I dreaming?

Your brake options are nearly endless if you don't have a wheel/s to fit over your discs.
Hq stub axles will go straight in place of the Hg ones as well .
And yes Holden use the same front wheel bearing from early on to the Vc-Vh from memory.

Like the steering on my van when you engage the 4 wheel drum brakes Smooth.........you never know where it will go.

I have been casting all over the place for answers to two questions:-

Whilst Holden bearings are the same over numerous models, are they the same distance apart? (HG and Commodore)?

Is there an adaptor plate available to fit commodore calipers to either HG/HQ drum or disc studs?

And now a third: are adaptor plates for calipers legal?

I have read the Hoppers info on their site, but this info is not included. I am reluctant to ring them, as I have no intention of buying from them, and they must be sick of fielding questions from mugs like me.

The bearings would be the same distance apart on the inner's&outer's I'd Imagine
Because they sit on a similar stub axle diameter/length
2- the cost of getting the calliper plate I'd imagine they would charge nearly the cost of the whole kit.
But the only way to really find out is ring them
3- I'm pretty sure they send the paperwork for their kit on request to  suffice the engineer

The advice of all posters here has been appreciated.

I have had a change of plan.
A HG fan just down the road has sold me a pair of freshly machined HQ discs, a pair of HQ stubs, a pair of Girlock aluminium calipers, a pair of cast iron Girlock calipers, and HQ rear drum brakes with freshly machined drums. The rear brakes have come from a 4 wheel drum HQ, so I presume that I need to change the cylinders and shoes to the type that suit disc fronts.

Dont fret, I am bound to come up with a new volume of questions to keep this forum active .

As promised, some more questions:-

I have bought some girlock aluminium calipers, which I think came from HJ, but not sure. I want to fit them to my HG, with HQ discs.
The calipers have slide pins, and one pin has a tubular rubber sleeve on it.
Questions are:-
1. I have searched ebay, but cannot find a caliper kit that includes the sleeve. Should it come with a kit?
2. Where should the slide pin with sleeve be fitted? At the top, which is leading edge, or at the bottom, being the trailing edge?
I also have a set of Girlock cast iron calipers, which dont have slide pins. The sliding is done on a flat track, with plates bolted above to keep it all together. These calipers each have a short and a long pad. I am uncertain as to which model they came from, however they do fit to HQ stub axles. The sliding arrangement on these is very stiff to operate, even after cleaning and greasing, and I think that they would cause brake pad drag, but I am certainly no expert.
What do you think about the comparison between the cast iron versus aluminium calipers?

If it was me I would use the girlock aluminium callipers ,They would transfer heat better.
From memory they have a longer pad too which will give slightly more braking power.
I have pbr cast iron/aluminium callipers and all my slide pins have rubber boots/ sleeves over them.
As for fitting it to leading /trailing edge callipers have a left and right affraid The bleeder nipple MUST be fitted to the top so the air comes out .
  There where a number of different types of callipers fitted to Hq-WB which are interchangeable with the stubb axles which ones you use are entirely up to you .Some people like the cast iron because they are stiffer with less flex compared to aluminium.Others prefer the ally for heat transfer.
The rubbers for the slide pins should come in a kit from PBR (slide pin kit) or Repco.
  Can you put up a picture of the cast girlock callipers as I am unsure of your explanation,most have slide pins for disc wiggle room.

It's ok I got the link.
I cannot say I have seen that type of calliper on the front of Hq-WB ,it could be a rear disc one or possibly a Hg non vented disc calliper.Look very narrow between the two pad face's
Hq-WB have a disc thickness of 1 inch
Maybe someone else can enlighten us to what their off...........James ,Rob, Greg. .?

Thank you panoz78, you appear to have hit the jackpot.

These calipers are hard to slide, even when the sliding area has been cleaned and greased. I wonder whether they would be prone to dragging on the disc after the pedal is released?

As long ass everything is in good order they should not drag,
The disc's should have a wobble of the tiniest amount (.10thou) to push the Pistons back in ..
