Thanks for the inspiration guys, a bit of fit and fiddle for me to do on the van over the holidays.
I will let you know how it goes with my solenoids operating the tailgate locks.

im very keen about the solenoid rear tailgate when you make it work take plenty of pictures i sick of dopey mates trying to open the top gate and strugling with the concept of having to turn the handel and lift [ i mean how hard is it ]

Still needs to be finished/neatened up.

Re: struts for tailgate
I fitted gas struts today, why haven't I done this mod sooner....
It works really well, shoots the tailgate up with ease, and even holds it closed firm when closed!
I used tailgate struts from a VT Wagon, really strong (450N) and a little bit longer than bonnet struts.
The holes had to be drilled a little lower than with red-pv's bonnet struts, but I think the extra length helps it to hold the tailgate closed when lowered, as it finishes its full compression about 10 cms from closing then starts to expand again to hold the tailgate firmly shut.
Very happy with the results, quick cheap mod, that you wish you had done sooner.

Re: struts for tailgate
I've had to add an update to this thread....
AL510 of the MV Motorsport division has alerted me to the fact we have installed our struts upside-down, apparently the main body has lubricant in it to seal it properly, if they are upside-down for too long they will fail.
It's an easy fix, just turn them around! Better than them failing on us!
Thanks again Al.
Stay tuned for updated pics....
