Wheel flares
Just wondering if anyone has purchased a set of these at all?
http://www.raiderindustries.com/displaydetail.asp?stkno=HWAF14
If so do they look like the way WIZARD has it's rear flares done.
P.S. i know WIZARD'S were steel and these are only fiberglass.

Re: Wheel flares
Craig to be honest mate you cannot beat metal flares, but on saying that it depends on your budget but iether way you still have to mould in the glass flres so you need to weigh it up mate.

Re: Wheel flares
I agree that metal flares are the best Tony, but if i get fiberglass ones they will be easier to put back to original (if that ever happens).

Re: Wheel flares
Hiya Agro.
Nah - my flares tapered back into the body half way down wheel arch. I didnt want the full wrap around flare look that most vans were running. The advantage of steel - heaps stronger and less likely to get damaged if you run monster wheels like I did. I once loaded up the van with all my display gear, trolley jack etc - going to Wagga I think in 83 - and didnt realise with a lot of high speed road bounce, despite the extra clearance created by the flares - my tyres were scrubbing out inside the flare as the van was bum heavy. The tyres actually had grooves worn in to side near the tread and smoke pouring out. No damage to flares - tyres - well they had a character mark in them. If the flares were glass - they could have been destroyed. I pulled into Picton and hired a box trailer, moved all the crap out of the back of the van - huge amount - and good as gold. Only caused by excess weight - but a lesson. After then - always used a trailer to take all the display gear any distance - I had quite a bit.

Hiya Rob.
After your explanation i think i'll have to go the metal way.
I'll go through all the pics i have of WIZARD to get the idea and see what happens from there.
Cheers

Re: Wheel flares
As I said Craig they are the way to go and as Rob has testified to this,I have had them on a couple of my cars and no problems all you need to find is and old school beater or coach builder you can't go wrong.

Re: Wheel flares
Hiya guys
Yep - thats the trick - find someone who is good in metal. Most panel shops - they would have no idea. I would not in a million years use the local shop. But - as earlier posts attest - metal will cost more, but less likely to crack with any body flex etc. and if you do in steel - ensure the steel is not the gauge of coke cans. Hard to find good panel makers from the old days. panel shops these days - they are simply bolt off and bolt on new panels. I would be doing lots of research into places that build rods, or anything custom before I got anyone to start chopping into the body. I am pretty sure I described how they did mine in the Wizard profile.
cheers

Re: Wheel flares
i can understand peoplenot wanting to drive 700+s with a show car but i much prefer the old school way where its used as a weekend car and cleaned for a week before a big show
That's the 80's cars get so much respect because people actually saw them on the road
I actually bought (and sold) a van in the early 90s that had SLR flares on the back and it actually looked pretty good
Anyone ever seen this before?

Ah, yes. Now i remember it - wonder how big that rubber is
Always loved the trim in this one as well. I can remember reading the original feature
Damn, this thing was pretty advanced at the time - monza front, Torana flares, Air, Steer
Re: Wheel flares
I knew Trevor I also worked with him at Freedom back in the 80s and also an x sundowner,he was running on the back 265x50x14 and 245x50x14 on the front.

Whilst Chrome on Blue looks O.K. with them on, i don't think i could do it to my van.
These mightn't look to bad though. (if they can be moulded on that is).

Re: Wheel flares
LH-LX Torana flares look great................... On LH-LX Toranas other than that they look a bit silly on anything else, you could make flares like the corolla ones easily enough.

Re: Wheel flares
sorry mate i do not. Raider industries made so much good stuff i often seen it on cars in the 80's and 90'. Group c flares, transam fronts , scoops etc. they make good stuff and they still have all the old moulds as of last xmas 2010 when i was down there.

Re: Wheel flares
So Agro,
have you done anything with the flared guards idea yet, or is it on the back burner. I do know of another option with steel flairs that I don't think anyone mentioned as I scrolled though this post. Using existing flares from a doner vehicle of similar size and shape is probably the easiest when it comes to metal flares and with so many of the newer cars today having them they are quite easy to get at a reasonable price.
the more pronounce the flares are the more you have to work with when trying to match the contour of your van. an example would be using a VE commodore guard, even though they dont go all the way around they would make a good start if you use a left hand and right hand guard to make one flare which wouldnt be that dear from the wrecker as long as the rear half of the guard was in good condition, its not that hard to join them. with it not being to dear to start with you could mock one up sit it on the van, once it fits perfectly its just a matter of dropping it into a panel shop to weld and paint I estimate between 1-1.5K from start to finish, the bigger cost will be for the Huge wheels to fit under them. I might have a go with one in the near future.
regards Robert
