Question: Did Holden Only Ever make Belmont HQ Vans?

According to my GMH Workshop Manuals HQ Vans were only ever made as Belmonts.

The 6 Cylinder Model HQ80170 and the V8 Model HQ80270.

Please remember that Sandmans are only Belmonts with the Sandman Option Kits fitted and that there Model Numbers will verify this. Yes you could get a 6 Cyclinder Sandman with a whole range of options.

Utes were made as Belmonts and Kingswoods.

If you beleive you have a Kingswood HQ Panel Van, please take a photo of the VIN and share it with us. The 6 Cylinder Kingswood Model would be HQ80370 and the V8 Kingswood Model would be HQ80470.

Model is 80170 which makes it a Belmont. Whats the QR means Rusty? I could tell you if it was a HJ-HZ or a LH-LX Torana! Not real sure of me HQ codes yet!

Yes, yours is a Belmont.

QR - Queensland Rail No only Kidding.

Q as in HQ.

QR stands for 253 High Compression (4.2 litre).

But I thought the letter (not letters) after the Model said which Plant it was made in.

I will have to do more research.

QR isnt the engine Rusty the engine is L20 which is a 6 cylinder, trans is M40 which is trimatic. So we'll have to keep researching!

That's what didn't make sense. I could tell from the plates that it is a 6 Cylinder Engine etc.

The Book I have says the Body Identification (Left Hand) Plate Model starts with the Letters being the Model e.g. HQ and then the Numbers identifying the Body Model & Style 80170 being a 6 Cyclinder Belmont Panel Van. I.e. HQ 80170

Leonie's Van Body Identification Model Number 80170QR doesn't follow the Book. It's the last letter that confuses the issue.

I note from the Plates that the Build Date is January 74 and that it was built in Sydney.

The HJ Book doesn't go into the Model Identification on the Body Identification Plate.

Does anyone else have any ideas?

It will be interesting to find out why it differs from the Books.

looking at the chassis number. its was built in Sydney. its weird that on the body plate for model it also has S. only van bodies were made in Qld and SA plants. that is also a first for me.

V8 Belmont Van:

NOTE: the QR at the end of the Model number (D.O.M. October 1973), also that the letters are raised like Leonies (D.O.M. January 1974). Numbers are raised. Also made in Sydney.


L6 Belmont Van:

NOTE: Information is Stamped from the top side and the format matches the GMH Manual. (D.O.M. May 1972). Made in Adelaide.

It appears that they either changed their plates between 72 & 73 or different Plants used different format Plates.

Does anyone have more info?

with the different numbers saying mne was maybe built in other states to, could that mean it has bits assembled in different states that all the nwent to sydney for it all to b put together? im not sure they do that but no harm in having a theory hahaha

Hey guys got a message today with some info on the QR code, this is what it said:

I am doing some research on body plates and found some on your site.

There was a qustion re the QR on the HQ Belmont van tags, both 308 and 202.

ALL Sydney built HQs have this.

It goes back to HT with TR thorugh to HZ with ZR.

QR is HQ Right hand drive.

Here's some numbers i have out of an old Rare Spares book, might be helpful to someone, looks like Leonies was the older type id carried over from the HG.

Regarding Rusty's question about the difference in the tags.
The way the tags were marked changed during the HQ series when the series 2 model
HQ was introduced.The series 2 HQ was ready for the metric system and the new regulations to be introduced in the up coming HJ model.These are the HQ's with the MPH/KPH speedos and orange front indicators and different wiring,fuel senders etc.
