Re: M20 impala shifter?
What did you need to know Dean?
Impala were typically an inline shifter not "H" pattern.
They advertised heavily in the 1970's and 1980's in magazines like CV&T etc.

Any more information would be appreciated Dr google didn't give me any answers
I was just having a play with it trying to work it out old mate who I got it off said it was a H pattern I haven't bolted it to the spare box yet so I don't know it's missing a few linkages or pins I think nothing I cant replace
So if its an inline shifter I'd imagine all the way foward is first
back is second
Third is Back or foward?

Re: M20 impala shifter?
it does look like it is a inline shift.
back in 1980 i had a similar shift on my m20.
it was a 'mr gasket vertical gate' shifter.
it had the main shift arm and 2 siamese rings you put 2 fingers into to pull up to ram the shift into reverse.
the 4 forward gears were from my ageing memory. forward 1st, back 2nd forward 3rd back 4th.
i wish i could find another one of those shifters. i loved it.

Just be careful, I note it says "professional shifter" on the side.......make sure you have the correct accreditation to use

Re: M20 impala shifter?
ok so i gave it a quick clean pulled it open and there is a lot of sand / grit mixed in with the grease it has a bit of wear on the selector this plus the grit i think was causing the gates to jamb together

Re: M20 impala shifter?
I completely striped it i found two shims on one side on the selector none on the other side this wouldn't have been helping the jamming of the gates gave it a quick debur a wipe clean and a smear of grease put it backtogether and she's done

Hi Dean,
If you sorted it out I have one too, which I'm going to use, it looks to be in real good condition. will trial fit this weekend on m21 I have.
Then will need to learn how to use the bloody thing LOL

Re: M20 impala shifter?
Hey Dean,
Did I mention that the Impala shifter is for a three speed not a 4 speed. I believe they did make one for the 4 speed Muncie and Saginaw but not the Aussie 4 speed. I had forgotten about it and hence the reason I never fitted it to my van. Originally had it on my torana which was a column shift 3 speed till I fitted the inline impala. I had forgotten all about it seems like it was so long ago, well at least 36 years ago. LOL

Re: M20 impala shifter?
G day rob no you didn't mention that but your one and mine have different numbers stamped on the bottom that might be a model no not a serial no
That could be why yours felt different
