urgent advice needed please
Ok, it looks like i have found a suitable van for the money i want to spend
v8 / auto / bench seat / lpg / good rego and minimal rust
now, the most urgent thing i need to know is about power steering
it did have power steer but said it was dripping oil and couldt be bothered fixing it at the time so put on a manual box he had laying round
he said he has it all sitting in a tray at storage and said he thinks it might just be the actual pump leaking from a hose but at worse it could be the steering box itself he's not 100% sure
what i need to nowi what is it worth?
what's the pump worth to reco and whats the steering box worth to reco
also, what parts should it include
Any help asap would be great as i want to try and buy it sunday arvo

Re: urgent advice needed please
On ebay Jason you can pick up a reco box for around the $260 mark and a reco pump for $150-200, so if you budgeted around the $450-500 mark you should be right.

dont i need lower arms or something?
or is it just pump and box
Re: urgent advice needed please
Heads up...
I don't remember the exact specs/details...
BUT... I had an HX one tonner and put the power steering from an HZ Statesman in it and found the pump was more powerful than the one it replaced and it had something to do with the lower arms being different lengths...
I loved it!!!!
A small nudge of the steering wheel and I was doing a U Turn! But the strain on the pump kept blowing hoses and other bits... I eventually took it all out and went to manual steering (couldn't afford the repairs at the time to keep the powersteering).
So I don't know what pump goes with what arms... but I do know there are differences to check and they affect the driving experience considerably.

Re: urgent advice needed please
The steering arms are different lengths, he should have the other arms if he put a manual box on, or maybe they're still on the van if he didn't swap them out when he did the box.
$450-500 should get you a reco pump and box, but if you have to chase up different arms and new hoses it'll blow out mate.
I'm guessing you'd like to keep the power steering for city driving?

Re: urgent advice needed please
Going from memory I think the HQ had shorter steering arms and therefore a tighter turning circle, alot of guys replace the later longer HJ-WB arms to gain this advantage. I do not know if there is any difference in the box/pump between the models though.
Best of luck with getting this van Jason, I hope you don't get the same problem as the last one that I was going to look at for you! Gotta understand the bloke having second thoughts about getting rid of the van though, I don't think I could ever sell mine now!

Re: urgent advice needed please
yeah, talked to him just before and it has the power steer are still connected to the box
offered it to me for $200 extra so even if the box and pump are totally shot then that's about what it would cost for brackets, arm etc so ill be in front if either the box or pump are ok
thanks people

next question
Ok, now he's also told me about some extra bits he bogged up (since he was just planning on selling it off and needed to pass rego)
two main points
there's rust above the pass side door hinge on the body section of the door jam
there was rust on the pass side wiper/cowl area that was plated 3 years ago so im assuming it is left over moisture that got in there before the plating - would that make sense?
he also recently replaced the front screen (been cracked for 3 years but did it for the sale)
when the screen was out there was a number of holes in the bottom channel where the base of the screen sat that has now been bogged (just for the sale)
before the screen was out you couldnt even tell it was there as it was in closer to the dash
he said he has never had water drip onto his feet and i got under it and the front floors are fine except for one hole about the size of a 10 cent piece on the pass side just in front of the seat near the scuff plate
what's peoples thoughts on this for those that have experienced rust issues

Re: urgent advice needed please
if the van has rust in the plenum and the bottom of the windscreen you can garentee its worse than you think i have been chasing rust like that in my van for years, I now have a mig welder and getting better with it all the time, a wise man once told me if you don't enjoy working on your car and doing constant repairs you proberbly have the wrong car.I feel thats what i will be doing for a few years yet but i am still enjoying it.Keeping these old holdens on the road is hard work but rewarding
Re: urgent advice needed please
an old mate of mine is a beater and did his term on HJs etc so he said he'll fix it for me so all looks good now
