Gidday James

Sounds like a job for CSI. LOL!

I did hear once that when a Number or Letter is stamped into metal that it distorts/bruises the molecules beneath and that if it was ground off that there was some scientific way of retreiving it. It might have been by applying some sort of etching acid.

But I honestly don't know.

It will be interesting to hear if it can be done and how.

Pity its not as simple as the Pencil on Paper Trick.

Good Luck!

I "Googled" thisfrom a Ford Forum:

"if you have no number there take a closer look to see if on area it
should be it has been ground off with angle grinder or if someone has
used a carbide burr to remove number .

the actual number can be retreived with specialist eqpt used by police
..

if no engine number is there then chances are the engine is a ringer ,
it could be a recon engine but usually they would display the orignal
number they came with from factory , none of the remanufacturers would
usually remove and engine number for a reason other than it was a
little chaud ."
