A sad story
Who else has one?
3 months ago on a backroad between Yeoval and Cumnock NSW i stumbled across a HQ sandman(yes, I am sure), old, covered in moss, barn door conversion. Stopped and knocked on the door (as you do), oh yeh, thats my sons, accross the road, but he's at work! Ok, whats he's number? oh, um, I dont know(v/old bloke). Ok I will drop in again, (I travel the backroad between orange and Dubbo fairly often), anyway i am sure you all know where this is going, sure enough, next time I go past its gone, oh cr@p!!
also have spotted a HJ-X pano in Bathurst, chocked up in a paddock, didnt knock on the door but maybe SMQQTH could check it out if anyone is intersted ??? sorry for dobbing you in Jon, maybe this one can be a happy story?
cheers

Re: A sad story
Mate it's a story we all have to tell.
Back when I owned my WB the first time and my mate owned his HX, around 1994. We use to cruise around on weekends looking for old cars. Everytime we went out towards the airport here in Tumut we'd pass a windowless HX/Z Sandman. It was yellow with blue stripes, had the front clip and motor and box removed. We must have went past the property it was on a 100 times and every time we always said "we should call in and see what they're doing with that".
It was as straight as and looked great.
Remembering vans where a bit more common back than and we where only 20 year olds, you know where this is going...............................
Than one day we're sitting at my mums and another mate cruises by and tells us about this van thats been taking to the local car dump(area at the tip).
We get all excited, pile in the vans and get there to find our yellow Sandman trashed because in the 10 minutes it took my mate to come and get us,(before mobile phones!) the council drove their bulldozer over it and crushed it, mint windowless Sandman shell, upper and lower gates, chassis the lot!

Re: A sad story
Jon,
dont know the street, but if you head down the road that goes past KFC (not the highway) towards the newish footy club (you cross over the river and there is a park area on the right), there is a road off to the left (dirt from memory), about 1.5km house on the left, actaully had a HQ out the front with GTS rims, has heap of cars out the back, one which is the PV. i didnt stop as I was driving around trying to get my boy to sleep while my girls where at the pool.
cheers

Re: A sad story
I really need to extract my finger and fire up the WB and go for a cruise. I've got a treasure map that leads to a one owner Chrome Yellow, 308, HQ Sandman. I should get onto it before it ends up a sad story.

Boppo,
Now I know where you are talking about.... went around to the house years ago, as they had a blue SLR mock up, bunch of hill billy's, nothing is for sale they reckon.
did find a deville Blue JXZ in someone yard coved by a tarp the other day, will go around, bash on the door and say hello some time.

People sometimes change their mind Jonboy when you rock up with a fistful of dollars! The Deauville blue van sounds promising though!

Re: A sad story
Here's another sad story for you guys. Hxbunny might know the details better than me because it happened years ago and I've heard the story from a dozen different people, here goes.......
A local guy owns a HQ van with a statesman front, mags etc. Apparently it has engine dramas or something and he decides to get rid of it for the insurance, so they tow it out of town towards Brungle and push it off the top of Killimicat mountain, hoping it'd roll. The poor old HQ stays upright and gets caught in a fence, so they cut the fence and push it again and it makes it all the way to the bottom unscathed! So they torched it! Unfortunately for them someones drove past in the mean time and notified the police and on their way back to town the police get them, so no insurance.
The vans still sitting there today all these years later, it's well and truely buggered and has had the side ripped out off it. I've got photos of it somewhere but I'll get some fresher ones for the vans in paddocks section soon.

Re: A sad story
Here's another one for you guys:
A guy from Wagga builds up a nice HZ van, even makes the cover of C,V and T and wins some awards even at the van nats. He sells the van to another Wagga local who trades it in at a car yard, where it's purchased by a complete idiot from Adelong who drives it for around 3 months than parks it behind the cafe he lives above. He leaves the van there un attended for the next 12+ years and than moves it to a paddock near town. He refuses to sell the van to a heap of locals that tried to buy it than sells it to a bodgy blow in copper for $700! The copper strips the van to make a quick buck and the remains of the van end up in a wreckers.

Re: A sad story
That was sad , missing " by that much". I think I know your van. Years ago you ran it in Streetfighter and ran too quick, like under 13 seconds I was running my Monaro that day you did that. Am I right?
I was at the Nostalgia's on Sunday but had to leave at 4 to go to a BBQ
Another thing, Re: Cumnock. My Dad, Aunties and Uncles grew up in Cumnock and generations of my family also lived and made their mark in Molong , Orange and Cumnock. Bit of History Also I'll be in Molong next week sometime for my Aunties Funeral.

Hey ! I was right! It really was a great meeting. A friend of mine also returned after 4 years after a damage car rebuild, so it was special for that alone as well .
At Molong I don't think I'll have time to look. Will only be there for Funeral with family then back to western Sydney area. Don't know which day yet.
Cheers Ron

Boppo I'll be in Molong on Monday 6th Watch out for old dude driving Yellow Monaro CV8
OK Sad Van Story
There was a HQ Van called "Witch Queen" Was one of the very first Vans with murals on it in 1975. It evolved a few times with murals , colour and engine upgrade etc, etc, Anyway as things progress , it was sold in the early 80,s
Unfortunately , it was destroyed by a speedboat at MT Ousley.
HOW ???? The speed boat dislodged itself from the trailer at speed and smashed into the van destroying the windscreen , the roof ===written off , too expensive too repair at the time.GONE
I recently found this out from its original owner , Rowan Wilson, I knew he sold the van , but didn't know that happened as I was in Wagga at the time and I didn,t see him much in those days.
