I doubt I'll go next year if it's at Phillip Island or Geelong and definately wouldn't travel to WA for it. I thought it might be in NSW since there's a few van clubs in here now.

if it appears that it won, and I am sure its a nice looking van, it pays to have Vic numberplates on your van, even if its registered interstate - he must have borrowed them for the day or transferred rego b4 the event???

Why would you bother changing your rego just for the van nats? Rolling Eyes If you really do get judged differently based on which state your from than its no wonder its dieing off. I did witness some very poor judging results at the 2006 nats. There was 2 vans that made the Top 10 that I didn't think where worthy. They where Jaffa and Temptress, I thought there where plenty of nicer, better detailed vans there. Two better candidates instead of them where Stormbringer and GAMBLR, maybe some of the confusion in all of this and why an escort(SQUIRT) beat Street Legal lies in how the events judged and the fact that people like me on the outside have never had how its judged explained to me.
But I still fail to see how a very ordinary van with rust issues and an interior that doesn't even follow a theme can beat a well built and detailed van with a complete theme throughout it or how an escort thats stock bodied, painted all the one colour with a boring as shit interior can beat a Holden with a multitude of custom work, chrome and modifications and a great interior.
I really like someone to explain how the judging works and show me some current judging sheets. I've got judging sheets from the old inter club days here and a few shows in the 80's and if they where still using these sheets I can tell you now you might get a lot more consistant results.

kiwis just had van nats here and same bullshit happens here so it must be a genitic thing that those sort of vanners have.
This is why i am totaly out of the vanning shit here as i can not tolerate bullshit and backstabbing not to mention brown holing and that about sums up kiwi vanning , much like Aus i suppose Question

The plate on Red Baron are club permit plates, which cost bugger all - it still allows the vehicle to be driven for club sanctioned events (or maintenance purposes), but as the thing is mostly trailered it's probably a cheap way to legally drive it sometimes.

He must have access to a Vic address to have it registered on Vic Club Permit, I would have thought.

Hey forgot to mention that my mate Greg and another of his mates turned up for a look on Saturday with there Sandmans and where told to leave the area or pay $150 to go in and when they said they just wanted to drive in a lady told them that there was hundreds of thousands of dollars of show vans inside and they would not be allowed in, Greg said to her he was sitting in a genuine HX Sandy and that his mate was a genuine HQ sandy and she said - I dont care what your in , theres show cars in there, He told her to get FUCKED and he would never attend an event staged by you fucken wankers and you wonder why new vanners dont want anything to do with you guys, Here is Gregs van just in case you dont know it. It would be interesting to know the full story around the reg I guess - it's quite possible that it's legit. I don't know the owner or anything about the van, so I'm not making any claims here.

The same shit happened at Port Macdonnell a couple of years back with someone travelling with Freestyler and myself, who was in a nice yellow Holden van - obviously better than some of the rust buckets who had entered. Anyhow, this guy and his partner couldn't stay more than a day and so didn't pre-enter - he had to ba back home on the Sunday. They wanted him to pay for the full entry or visit the show and shine on the Sunday. Bullshit, especially after travelling so far.

i dont know why they wanted 150. when it was 100 to enter the event for the 4 days and 35 to stay the sat night and join the show. alot vans turned up on sat arvo.

Maybe they should mate, but at the end of the day if you live in QLD and have a bodgy Vic address to register your car, than in my books it's definately abusing the system. Shocked They all get caught out in the end.

Mate!!! I can understand them charging $30-$40 if he wanted to enter on the day and be judged and eligible for awards but $150 for parking would make it the dearest carpark in the country! Shocked Going of the photos there looked to be only 2 or 3 cars there you'd class as show cars the rest look like daily drivers, your mates Sandy is spot on I've seen photos of it before and believe he's had trouble before at van events? Question
If vanning's going to grow in this country, than the powers to be need to get of their high horses and allow new people into the scene, not just sheepish followers that will bowe down to them and do everything their way, but new people with some fresh ideas on how to improve things and promote the hobby/sport.
I honestly think that most of their problems stem from being scared to death of change and jealousy, if you have some new ideas and a half decent van they see you as a threat so automatically exclude you as a defence mechanism.

Aaah the Van Nats...
Love them or hate them, if you want to cruise with more than twenty vans, have a few drinks that night with vanning mates from across the country that you haven't seen for the last twelve months and enjoy some mostly friendly vanning competition on Show Day, there is NO alternative. We would all love to go to more vanning events like the Nats, the QLD State Van Titles or the VIC State Van Titles, but we're in short supply of people who want to organise this type of event. This years Nats was a back to basics event as no one volunteered last Easter to put it on. However, those that do put up their hand up for a future vanning event, do get the opportunity to pick the venue and make up their own rules. I didn't like the repetition of the same venue year after year for the Van Nats, so a couple of us volunteered to take on the job, bend some rules and be a little rebellious. We treated our "enemies" with respect and produced a non-traditional event that moved away from the same area of 17 years and got the Nats "on the road". It paved the way for future events that breathed new life into vanning that led to the most successful (2003) and most well attended (2009) Van Nats in the last 25 years.

No Van Nats is perfect and we would all love them to be a short drive from where we live, but its usually closest to the organisers home town.

All the Majestic & ex-Majestic Vanners that entered the event seem to have a great time over the weekend. I have not heard any complaints from inside the venue. It was much better than originally expected and from what I saw at least three majestic vanners would have made the Top Ten this year if they had better luck or a different attitude.

Most of the answers to the mystery of "who won this years Van Nats" are in those CV&T and Vantastic magazines from the past - I'm sure the Majestic historians are looking up those references as we speak. Its a full on custom van from the eighties with custom bodywork, radical drivetrain transplant and most importantly it is a quality build as the winner of the Van Nats these days is the van with the least amount of faults. You lose points for faults, you don't get disqualified for them - it all depends on the circumstances of the day. We should be congratulating our winner for bringing that custom magic, that got most of us into vanning, into the new millennium.

Problems without solutions is just bitchin' and complaining. I look forward to your solutions... Very Happy

Yeah Fres, we all know what won. I dont know if any MV vans would've made the Top 10 mate, so of the vans that where in it this year obviously where there because of there owners not there quality.
Why dont you co-ordinate a NSW bid to run the 2011 nats? You already know that MV would support you, I think the Sundowners would too and as for the other knuckle heads well I doubt that, as they cant even attend a free BBQ.
You only need a commitee mate and some people willing to put in the time and effort. I think it'd be great if the vanners(and van owners) in NSW could put their personnel issues aside, agree to disagree(punched on) and got on with organising an event for the better of vanning. Your the man to make it happen Fres, get that ball rolling........

I have no doubt that Andrew, Rhino and one other would have made the Top Ten as what you said was true - mostly street vans this year. Those at the Friday Meeting would have heard about my proposal for 2011. With eleven reasons NOT to put it on, three reasons to put it on could have tipped the balance. A new magazine featuring utes and vans to hit the newstands later this year, a five day Easter weekend and the perfect location. Unfortunately, at 3.40pm that day, Bathurst knocked us back...

I think one of the main reasons this year was back to basics was the fact that the years before better than ever nats at Geelong ran at such a huge loss, it put M&M behind the 8 ball to start. Mate give up on the van nats ever being at Bathurst unless your willing to change the date from easter. They always hold races at Bathurst over easter and the nats would get over shadowed, and the council I think has enough on it's plate for that weekend.
I still honestly believe that NSW could host a really good van nats with the right people behind it.
I agree that Vandil,Rhino and GAMBLR should've made the Ten if they went, but honestly mate some of the stuff that made the Ten didn't really deserve to. As for the van with the least mistakes winning, thats a shithouse concept, no wonder a near stock bloody Commodore ute got in, it's new! It shouldn't have any mistakes or wear and tear. The judging needs reworking in my opinion.

And I also think that if NSW put in a bid to run the 2011 nats, that they need to think outside the square and make some drastic changes to the way it's run,judged and the program of events. Start from scratch with a fresh start and see how it goes, at the end of the day if it doesnt work they can go back to the same old way its ran now and live in the past. Rolling Eyes
